The startup checklist

What You May Need Before You Operate

Every trucking business is different — what you need depends on what you haul, where you operate, and whether you work for hire. These are the steps most new carriers encounter. Your guided setup walks through which ones apply to you.

Business Entity & EIN Readiness

Most carriers form an LLC or corporation and get a federal EIN before registering. Sole proprietors have extra considerations worth understanding first.

USDOT Registration

The foundational federal identifier for most commercial operations — required before most interstate operations and by many states for intrastate carriers.

Operating Authority (MC Number)

If you haul regulated freight for hire across state lines, you’ll likely need operating authority in addition to a USDOT number.

BOC-3 Process Agent

Carriers with operating authority must designate a process agent in each state. We explain what that means and how the filing works.

UCR Registration

The Unified Carrier Registration program applies to most interstate operations, with annual renewals based on fleet size.

MCS-150 / Biennial Updates

FMCSA requires carriers to update their information every two years — even if nothing changed. Missing it can lead to deactivation.

Insurance on File

Authority activation generally requires proof of insurance filed by your insurer. We help you understand the sequence so you’re not stuck waiting.

New Entrant Audit Readiness

New carriers enter an FMCSA monitoring period and can expect a safety audit within the first months. Knowing what’s reviewed helps you prepare from day one.

Educational overview — not legal advice. Requirements vary based on vehicle weight, operation type, cargo, geography, and state regulations.

For first-time carriers

You Don’t Need to Know Every FMCSA Acronym Before You Start

Most people who start a trucking business aren’t compliance experts — they’re drivers, mechanics, dispatchers, and entrepreneurs who are good at the work itself. The federal side can feel like alphabet soup: USDOT, MC, BOC-3, UCR, MCS-150.

You don’t have to untangle it alone. Tell us about your operation — what you haul, where you run, whether you’re for-hire — and we’ll show you which requirements apply to you and what order to handle them in. No jargon walls. No guessing whether you missed something.

We help you understand what applies to your operation and what to do next.

Generally, you need operating authority (an MC number) if you transport regulated freight for hire across state lines. Private carriers hauling their own goods often don’t. We’ll help you understand which category fits your operation.

The Unified Carrier Registration program is an annual, fleet-size-based registration that applies to most carriers operating in interstate commerce. It renews every year.
FMCSA requires carriers to update their registration information every two years, even if nothing has changed. Missing the update can result in deactivation of your USDOT number.
